It is sometimes a challenge to find anything for a good deal.

Urban outfitters has been one of my new favorite places to find fun patterned and colorful skirts to wear with tights. Simply pair with a black v-neck t-shirt and you are good to go...

5. http://www.dsw.com/dsw_shoes/catalog/product.jsp?productRef=CLEARANCE+SEARCH&category=&prodId=194691
Flats are wonderful, even better if they have a small heel. I have seen a cute trend for fall with flats and a really fun colored thin sock with jeans.

Throw this cardi-wrap over anything and you will feel super comfortable and with a skinny belt around it you can look dressy too.

7. http://www.hm.com/us/__fashionstudio.nhtml# (search for knit bolero here) H and M is a fabulous place for inexpensive items. While you can't shop online, this bolero will be in stores and would be warm and useful.

Zara has landed

For all you Chicago residents, Zara is downtown! In the heart of Michigan Avenue, the international superstore has opened its doors. While the crowds are huge right now, the clothing does not disappoint. The first floor alone had great wool coats, cardigans, even leather skirts. The second floor was filled with fabulous blazers (boyfriend, cropped, patched elbows). For my corporate friends, Zara has a great suit selection as well as buttoned-up dresses. The scarves were abundant and in every style imaginable. If any of you have visited Zara in Spain, you will have serious flashbacks. It seemed as though every worker was directly imported from overseas and the Europeans living in Chicago were out shopping in full force. Definitely a cultural and pleasurable shopping experience. My suggestion is to go there during the week as it is sure to be hopping this weekend.

I wish I was a little bit taller...

Ankle boots, heeled boots, over the knee boots.....the options are endless. The nice thing about going out after summertime is pairing great boot styles with jeans and dresses. I think everyone should try to have at least one pair of dressy black ankle boots or one tall heeled pair. DSW is a great place to browse for different styles in order to see what size heel is comfortable. Hint: real leather breathes so you don't feel like your feet/calves are melting.

1. http://www.shopdolcevita.com/detail.aspx?ID=910 Again, Dolce Vita has great boots of all types. I would choose black or grey in this style and pair with black tights and dresses/skirts, or over jeans with a fun jacket (see below post on jackets)

2. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3035669/0~2376778~2372808~6007659~6007693?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6007693&P=2 I chose this ankle boot specifically because the heel height is reasonable and allows for a stylish night out without serious foot pain

3. http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=51761&vid=1&pid=700696&scid=700696002 Another variation of the ankle boot. If they don't show your size, remember you can just google the style name and brand to find other places to buy.

4. http://www.aldoshoes.com/us/women/boots/tall-boots/76339721-dehne/91 Don't be afraid of suede...just remember to spray before wearing

5.http://www.ninewest.com/Lensar/4112247,default,pd.html?cgid=4426131&itemNum=109&variantSizeClass=&variantColor=BROWNLE These are great with regular boot cut jeans or with tights. You can buy anklet socks now anywhere that hosiery is sold that look great with ankle boots and jeans.

Chill-out

It probably would have been smarter to post about outerwear earlier because it is a little late to find your winter coats right now. But, if you live in a colder climate, your jacket may been the only clothing item most people see on a daily basis. Therefore, I tried to find some options and styles that would brighten up any cloudy day.

1.http://clubmonaco.com/102009/w1.asp Unfortunately you can't buy online, but stores are pretty easy to find. They have an amazing selection of wool coats that have a fitted shape and great quality. Always check the back of the store for the sale section first.

2.http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/onlineProductDisplay.vs?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=EF-207973&page=1&cgname=OSCLOOUTZZZ&rfnbr=6620&atp=a Between the catalog and online, victoria secret is always offering deals. Beyond that, their coat selection is pretty great. I chose this particular style because I love having one colorful coat to spice up the black and brown of winter.

3. http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=47892&vid=1&pid=749254&scid=749254002 I had to add one off-the-wall jacket to the mix. Having a sequined blazer/jacket is great to throw over dresses in colder temps while still staying dressy, or pair with jeans, tall boots, and a cotton shirt.

4. http://www.bluefly.com/MICHAEL-Michael-Kors-black-leather-Moto-zip-jacket/cat20010/301485501/detail.fly Searching for a motorcycle jacket that is real leather and not super expensive has been a challenge. This is a great find and awesome price.

Mani-CUREd

A quick post about my some of my favorite nail-polishes.... Over the years I have shifted from the french manicure square acrylics to just short round manicures. For whatever reason, changing my polish to reflect my mood for the week is a ton of fun. Whether you opt for a pro to paint the digits, or DIY, I'd try some of these fun colors...

Essie (found on http://www.ulta.com/ or at most nail salons)

-wicked (Emma's strong endorsement here)
-sole mate
-ballet slippers
-mink muffs
-chin chilly (shown right)

OPI (http://www.opi.com/, or at most nail salons)

-you don't know jacques
-yes....i can, can
-give me moor
-suzi skis in the pyrenees
-suzi says da!

Note: If you are nervous about the dark colors for the workplace, I have noticed that they have become more widely accepted, just try to keep polish free from chips and shorter in length

Stomping grounds...

Living in a city doesn't always allow for wearing the high-heeled boots I often admire. However, flat boots are now at least comparable in terms of looks. I have owned a pair of cognac Steve Madden riding boots for two years that have provided me the ability to walk the streets of Chicago with ease. With so many types of flat boots out there I figured I'd share some cute ones I've seen (most around $150). Note: most of my selections are for those like me that need a little extra calf room so you can actually tuck in jeans without permanent lines on your legs.

1. http://www.zappos.com/steve-madden-incca-black-leather?zlfid=111 (zappos and piperlime have free shipping and great customer service)
2. http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=51759&vid=1&pid=719618&scid=719618002 (these are almost identical to the ones I have and they have lasted two years)
3. http://www.heels.com/womens-shoes/petler-boot-black-crosta.html (if you choose suede just make sure to spray well with a protectant before wearing)
5.http://www.shopdolcevita.com/detail.aspx?ID=893 (this website was just featured in InStyle Magazine as a great place for online shoes)
6. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=402971&CategoryID=25439 (I included these specifically for my tall friends because sometimes with longer legs, the regular tall version looks short on the calf. Also, over the knee boots look awesome if you have long legs)

Sucking In

Alright, by now you will realize I have a theme with regards to slimming/trimming/tucking and clothing. I love items that help you feel a little lighter. So, to add to my love of black opaque tights, I decided to find the perfect black legging. Another fall/winter must-have, the legging can substitute for tights by giving you added warmth. They can be worn with a long t-shirt and cropped blazer, a sweater and riding boots, or a wild sequined top and heels. The other day I was on the search for pieces to use for Halloween and stumbled upon the best leggings ever! American Apparel has a new line that are high-waisted (see picture). They come in a variety of weird fabrics (I would not style them as the above picture shows), but have the ability to suck everything in. You can easily wear these with anything over them because there is no potential of love-handles showing. I highly suggest getting a pair:)

West Loop Whereabouts

Despite my constant desire to post about style finds, I thought I'd change it up a bit and focus on my favorite neighborhood...the "West Loop" in Chicago. I am definitely biased since I live in this very area, but nonetheless think it is a great spot for anyone to check out (either when visiting Chicago or living here). Here are my favorite places...

Beer Bistro (1061 W. Madison)- great place to grab a drink and great food. My favorites are the tatar tots, tomato bisque, pizza, and hummus plate (if I am feeling healthy)
http://www.thebeerbistro.com/ P.S.- free shuttle to all United Center sporting events

Two Sisters Boutique- http://www.shop2sisters.com/ (1167 W. Madison)- everything in the store is under $200 and most things are well under that price. I have found great jewelry and scarves here.

Sushi Wabi- 842 W. Randolph (http://www.sushiwabi.com/)- right in the heart of the amazing restaurants on Randolph, this sushi place is wonderful and unassuming. Its pretty small and cozy on the inside, but allows for you to just focus on food and conversation.

Fix Chicago-1101 W. Fulton St. (http://www.shopfixchicago.com/)- new to me, this boutique carries some upscale brands and unique styles, definitely a hidden gem

Meli Cafe and Juice Bar- 301 S. Halsted (http://www.melicafe.com/)- AMAZING breakfasts in greektown with fresh smoothies or juice options. Usually a line in the morning, but it moves fast and you will love your brunch/breakfast.

Bess and Loie- http://www.bessandloie.com/ (1015 W. Lake)- all types of accessories are found here like purses, clutches, and jewelry. Everything is really different from anything you will see anywhere else in Chicago

Smitten- http://www.smittenboutique.net/ - 1041 W. Madison - Best place for engagement/shower/bachelorette gifts. They also have some baby gifts and help with wedding planning.

The Fig Tree - 1037 W. Madison http://www.thefigtreechicago.com/ -Best place for any type of gift (baby, birthday, wedding, friend, etc) They also carry a lot of cute jewelry and seasonal decor.

Wrap it up

I never wear turtlenecks. Its the feeling of something tight around my neck that makes my cringe (or itch depending on the material). However, this year I am obsessed with wrapping my neck up in something different....scarves! There are so many styles and lengths. I am a huge fan of the super long and have bold patterned ones. Worn with just a simple white tank and sweater, they can dress up a casual outfit. I narrowed down a few unique scarves I think everyone will like.

1. I was in American Apparel and they had an awesome circular scarf (shown in picture) that is big and comes in a ton of colors (the unisex circle scarf http://www.americanapparel.net/)
2. "Tolani" scarves are the best! I own a blue one that I found at a local boutique. However, http://www.blueheavenboutique.com/tolani.html, shows a lot of the styles worn by celebrities.
3. Pretty much every single scarf at www.urbanoutfitters.com (search accessories) is great. They are reasonable prices and have a ton of "eternity" or circle scarves. I especially like the one that can double as a hood.

A Slanted View

Given my excitement over the Zara store opening on Michigan Avenue this thursday (I will be there with bells on), I started to think about my favorite clothing item: dresses!! I am a huge fan of all types of dresses and lately I like assymetrical necklines (one shoulder). Even those of us who don't have Michelle Obama's arms can look cute in this style. Here are some cutes ones I've seen recently....

No Jiggle in the Wiggle

Quick update on work-out gear.... I have forever been plagued by the need for a good pair of workout pants. Shorts have always created a chafing problem for me (gotta love the thighs), while yoga pants have been so "low-rise" that I couldn't bend over. My problem has recently been solved by copying my friend Sheetal's workout gear. Nike has created the best capri, dri-fit, pant imaginable. No sweat shows through the material, they have a slightly higher rise so all tummy flab is in check, and they are cut shorter than pants to allow for flexibility (colors: black, grey, tan). They are called Dri-Fit Core Tech Running Capri (http://www.nike.com/). Disclaimer: must be okay with spandex to wear these.

S.O.S

Do you remember Caboodles? Well my love of those little plastic trunks has led to my current makeup storage system- a large silver makeup carrying case that works great in tight spaces (i.e. my bathroom). While getting ready this morning, I realized that if stranded on a desert island, my case could hold many life-saving items in its many compartments. Here are just a few things I would need for survival.....

1. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer spf 20 - Not a fan of foundation, I love that this provides some coverage without a heavy feeling. It comes in an oil-free verson and in different shades (I use the "nude" color). (http://www.lauramercier.com/, http://www.sephora.com/)
2. Lorac TANtilzer body bronzing illuminator- Any event or wedding that requires bare body parts will benefit from this liquid shimmer that doesn't smell like a tanning bed. It doesn't stain the skin orange; just use it like makeup for your body (hint: put it on before the clothing to avoid spots) (http://www.sephora.com/)
3. Maybelline Intense XXL (volume and length) Mascara in Very Black-unable to afford Latisse and its eyelash growing ability, this mascara has helped my little lashes look longer. I have tried every type of mascara and this works great. You can find it at almost any drug store (just buy two because you'll go through it quickly)
4. Anatasia Beverly Hills brow powder duo-II (http://www.anastasia.net/, http://www.sephora.com/)- given my addication to plucking, using this powder with a smalled angled brush has been helpful. It fills in any gaps or thin areas of your brow without looking waxy or super dark. (I use medium-ash color)

Crew and You

On the drive from Chicago to Ann Arbor this past weekend I brought along my reading material...US weekly and JCrew catalog. After a quick picture glance at US Weekly, I moved onto JCrew and was amazed that I had dogeared almost every page in the catalog for things I liked. Here are my top finds.... (both in the store, online, and catalog). Also, if you are a student they offer a 20% discount. (http://www.jcrew.com/)

1. Sienna Fringed Mocassin Bootie -I already purchased a pair and they are the most comfortable shoe for walking. Plus, they are under $100 and come in different colors.
2. Matchstick Jeans- while the title is intimidating I can promise you don't need to have stick- legs to like these jeans...they are a great skinny jean and are great tucked into boots
3. Single-wrap skinny belt in Gold- Not only is this super inexpensive but a great thing to use both in the belt loops and over a long fitted cardigan
4. All cardigans-I really like all of their new cardigans. The sequined pockets, ruffles, and long styles are all great for colder weather. If you head to the sale section at the back of the store you can always find a great deal.

Happy Shopping!

Slimming item for fall

One fall trend (if it is still a trend) that I cannot live without would be black opaque tights. Paired with dresses/miniskirts and slouchy ankle boots, tights can be very slimming. For those of you who know me, black hosiery comprises my fall/winter "uniform." They provide warmth as well as added confidence during a pale-leg season. However, the search for the perfect pair of tights can be overwhelming. My absolute top choice would be DKNY control top opaque tights (http://www.nordstrom.com/, http://www.macys.com/). They are super comfortable without reminding you of the ones you wore in first grade. I buy four pairs to last the season (and beyond).

Fragrance

For my first official tidbit I thought I'd focus on perfume. Maybe this is because I purchased Lola by Marc Jacobs, (http://www.sephora.com/) on friday and am obsessed. I proceeded to spritz myself, my scarf, then the entire contents of the suitcase I was packing in order to have the scent everywhere. For those of you who like the new, musky, slighty masculine styles of perfume, here are my top three choices.....

1. Tom Ford White Patchouli- a tad pricey but one squirt is enough and it lasts ages (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/)
2. Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb- has a version specifically for your hair which is less expensive and a great idea (http://www.nordstrom.com/)
3. Narcisco Rodriquez for Her- I first discovered this when it launched and it is the smell my husband comments on consistently...also my sister copied this one immediately (http://www.sephora.com/)

Let's see how this goes....

I have been thinking about starting a blog for awhile now. It seems like everyday things catch my eye or attention that I want to share with others. Most of my informational finds pertain to anything and everything "girly" (clothes, makeup, shoes, etc.). However, since reality television seems to rule many of my evenings, I may have the need to post comments on issues displayed on Bravo TV as well. So, I hope that this turns out to be fun and helpful! Here goes......
